Enough is enough

Monday April 1st - 2013 - Enough is enough

Fair enough = I agree/It makes sense
Hard enough = The situation is already a complex one
Funnily enough = Strangely/surprisingly
Sure enough =For sure

Advantages and disadvantages having a big family

What do you call children that look identical or were born on the same day?

2- twins
3- triplets
4- quadruplets
5- quintets
6- sextets
7- septets
8- octuplets

Lots of family meetings
Lots of special occasions e.g. weddings, graduation ceremonies, baptisms, prize-givings, birthdays, end-of-the-year company parties, wedding anniversaries
You can bring people together at a funeral = gather people at a funeral
they never really needed friends around
The problem of having a maid is …
losing your privacy
children becoming dependent and not used to doing household chores

A closer look at language:
What's the difference between the two sentences?

I'm used to washing the dishes and I used to wash the dishes

I’m used to washing the dishes = I’m accustomed to washing the dishes = I usually wash the dishes

be used to + doing

I used to wash the dishes, but now I have a dishwasher
(I don't do it anymore)

Only children are so used to being the center of attention

With a lot of brothers and sisters, you have
more fun together
more fights
more conflicts
more bills for the parents
more homework to take care of

Some brothers and sisters are closer to some than to others
to be close to someone = to have an affectionate relationship with someone

My brother and I were very close. We would tell each other our darkest secrets

Only child - general characteristics
spoiled
selfish
bossy
lonely or solitary
shy
reserved

But they can be
well-educated
precociously responsible

Do you agree?

When we think of children, we usually associate with
innocence
regeneration
spontaneity
curiosity
sincerity
reflection of their environment
magnets
open-mindedness
mischief (trouble making)
teasing
to tease = to provoke = to instigate
a teaser

If there is a huge age difference

An only child can be forced to be ..

p.56 Reading and Speaking
over-ambitious
keen to regain power= extremely interested in regaining power

What can we conclude about the first-born child in general based on this picture?

p.120 Reading and Speaking
siblings = brothers and sisters
a brat = a spoiled child
if thwarted = if rejected
to rely on = to trust = to count on = to depend on
linger = continue = prolong
harbor feelings = protect/hide feelings
harbour (UK) colour, behaviour, favourite
harbor (US) color, behavior, favorite
A harbor = a port
I always had the feeling that
They were quite different
They would argue or fight but nor battle
I saw myself in this description
The funny thing is …. = Funnily enough = What’s interesting about this is ...
