Happiness is ....

As cliché as the ideas may sound here, the topic is undeniably a good one to read and talk about:

After all, what is this thing we call HAPPINESS?

Loving what you do

To the kid in all of us

To the kids in all of us

People say we never completely stop being a child. This child could be buried and lost somewhere deep inside us or appear every now and again.

Others advise us to never stop
being a child because b
eing happy is not
letting the child inside of us die.

It is
the secret of being jovial at an advanced age

It's about seizing the day, or as they say in Latin, Carpe Diem.

Carpe Diem = enjoy the moment = live intensely = live today as if it may become your last because it really could be.

Empty words or excellent advice?

Romantic dream or possible reality?

To keep the child in us alive, we have to be able to let our imaginations run wild, to see life time and again like a story.

Entertaining stories have one central element: the use of vibrant or more colorful words. Here are some examples from p.110 Vocabulary and Writing ex.4

1. entered the house = burst into the house
to burst = to explode
2. got into her bed = crawled into her bed
3. jumped out of bed = leaped out of bed
to leap = to jump very high
One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind
4. took hold of = grabbed
5. intent on eating her = intent on devouring her
6. took the ax = seized the ax
7. after this difficult situation = after this ordeal

Stories normally use more vivid or specific words to replace normal ones like walk, talk, laugh, run, and look, e.g.

CREEP, STROLL, MARCH, STAGGER, STUMBLE
WHISPER, SCREAM, SHOUT, STAMMER, GRUMBLE
CHUCKLE, ROAR, GIGGLE
DASH, RUSH, HURRY
STARE, PEEP, GLANCE, GLARE, GAZE

Here are two songs that work with STUMBLE and PEEP

So tell us, do you stammer when you have to speak in front of an audience?  What other reactions do you usually have?

No happy (politically correct) endings

Fairy tales: can there be anything more innocent or pure?

These stories always begin with:

Once upon a time

and end with:

and they lived happily ever after

Don't preach it or teach it

In this class, we share our views on s
macking and establishing curfews for children and teens. In the process, we look at how keep can have several meanings

(or Beating or Corporal Punishment) of kids

There are many types of smacking or beating. This disciplinary act is sometimes referred to as corporal punishment.

spanking
washing the mouth with soap
tongue-burning
pinching
ear-wringing
palm-hitting
bottom-smacking or caning

Most people today prefer other measures like establishing or setting limits. After all, parents can be arrested for hitting their kids.
But you must take into consideration many other things apart from going to jail before hitting a child.
How serious was the offence?
Would it be fair to hit a child?
Would you have the courage to do it?
Is smacking an act of cowardice?
Are parents who use corporal punishment just exaggerating?

So, what's the verdict - should we be FOR or AGAINST smacking? It's not a matter of being for or against, it's a question of making the child understand and learn to be responsible for their own acts.

Who was not a sort of a menace as a boy, like the famous comic character, Dennis the Menace?
Who wasn't naughty or badly-behaved as a child?

We heard four diverging views on the subject and saw how they used the word "Keep".

Corporal punishment kept one of the students out of trouble. In other words, it prevented him from getting/being into trouble.
Hard discipline fom my parents safeguarded me from drug dealers and the like. These people con't care about humans just about safeguarding their own interests.

Some common facts about teenagers

They can't keep secrets (they can't retain secrets)

They seldom keep up to date = they seldom stay up to date
They keep making the same mistake = they continue to make mistakes
Older people are known for keeping old things. These objects are very dear to them and would probably dio something to die for

Some people just keep talking about other people’s lives. They love sharing a juicy secret (juicy = succulent), spreading bombshells, making confindential information public
It's hard for me to keep my own secrets
making out = fooling around
I could write a dictionary on how not to speak English
Whenever I buy something it’s never the latest
I keep only things that are really dear to me
Some mistakes I keep making in English:
  • Mixing up pronouns
  • Using the right tenses
You realize it’s wrong only after you let it out
I throw everything out = I throw everything away
junk
I don’t like things piled up or I can’t stand seeing piles of old things in my house
I never used to have pocket money/have an allowance

Nobody is to blame

It seems our society grows more aggressive with every passing day.

What do you think?

Verbal aggression can be as harmful as physical aggression
Verbal aggression can cause as much damage as physical aggression. The second can be a consequence of the first.
In a general sense/In most contexts/In general/Usually, physical aggression can be more damaging/harmful.

Trolling is when a large group of people attack you in group

Some possible factors
Globalization
The social environment

Talking about them ...
It’s natural for kids to ….
play jokes on someone
make fun of someone
mock someone
kid someone
laugh at someone

laugh with someone = enjoy a funny moment together
laugh about something e.g. a movie you saw, an incident
That’s the reason why I don’t know that song
Kids are not mature enough

There’s not just one guilty person/one culprit/one person to blame
guilty x innocent

Who is to blame for pupils’ disruptive behavior
Parents are not as strict as they used to be.

strict = severe = rigid = rigorous = controlling
liberal = permissive = lenient
Some parents still raise their hand at their children. They still smack their kids. (
to smack a child = to beat a child)

Parents need to establish limits

With, both parents working out of the home, it's unfair to ask parents to be more affectionate with their kids, don't you agree?
Teachers have the same amount of blame
Children spend a lot of time at school
Dealing with children is always going to be difficult
It’s an overreaction
Sometimes parents make little of their children’s wrongdoing/bad behavior
Sometimes parents play down their children’s wrongdoing/bad behavior
In this case, parents have all the blame
Parents don’t assume their responsibilities
Teens trust their friends/peers more than their parents. They suffer from peer pressure
You have to win their trust
A good model of education
A chaotic situation
Parents transfer their responsibility

Ways to punish kids:
timeout or penalty
detention
bullying
reprimand/sermon
grounding (not allowing kids to go out)

Papa don’t preach! = Papa stop giving me a sermon = Papa stop telling me what to do = Papa don’t lecture me

Remember the song?

Lets' see what you can say about the topic in writing:

What is the best way to control kids and teenagers in your opinion?
